Let's be honest, reading ingredient lists on beauty products can feel like you need a PhD in chemistry. Phenoxyethanol? Tocopheryl acetate? Dimethicone? It's enough to make anyone's eyes glaze over. But what if understanding your favorite products didn't have to be complicated?

As we embrace this new year, we're not here to tell you to throw out your entire beauty collection and start over. That's wasteful, overwhelming, and frankly, unnecessary. Instead, we want to empower you to become more intentional with your beauty purchases in the new year. Think of this as a refresh, a chance to pause before you repurchase that mascara or nail polish and ask yourself: "Do I know what's actually in this? Does it align with what I want for my skin and body?"

Two Tools That Make Ingredient-Checking Actually Easy

Gone are the days of frantically Googling ingredients in the beauty aisle. We love two resources that take the guesswork out of product analysis. The first is the Yuka app, just scan a product's barcode and get an instant rating out of 100, complete with insights on specific ingredients. It's perfect for on-the-go shopping decisions. The second is INCIDecoder.com, which dives deeper into what each ingredient actually does in the formula. Is that long chemical name a preservative, a humectant, or just filler? INCIDecoder breaks it down in plain English so you can understand whether an ingredient is pulling its weight in the product.

Ingredients We Love: The Hydration Heroes

When we vet products for use in our salon, hydration is always top of mind. Here are three ingredients we actively look for:

Glycerin – Simple, effective, and gentle. Glycerin is a humectant that draws moisture from the air into your skin. It's especially wonderful for maintaining nail health and keeping cuticles soft and hydrated.

Hyaluronic Acid – This moisture-binding superstar can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It plumps the skin, keeps lashes flexible, and helps maintain that healthy glow we all want. You'll find it in everything from serums to eye creams, and for good reason.

Squalane – Unlike heavier oils, squalane absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue. It mimics your skin's natural oils, making it perfect for all skin types and particularly beneficial for maintaining the delicate skin around your eyes and brows.

Ingredients We Steer Clear Of

Not all ingredients are created equal, and some just don't align with our philosophy of gentle, effective care. Here are three we avoid:

Parabens – While the research is still evolving, we prefer to error on the side of caution with these preservatives (methylparaben, propylparaben, etc.). There are plenty of effective alternatives available, so why not choose products that use them?

Synthetic Fragrances – When you see "fragrance" or "parfum" on an ingredient list, it can represent a cocktail of dozens of undisclosed chemicals. For sensitive areas like your eyes, brows, and the skin around your nails, we prefer products that are fragrance-free.

Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-Releasers – Often hiding in nail products under names like DMDM hydantoin or quaternium-15, these preservatives release small amounts of formaldehyde over time. It's a known irritant and something we consciously avoid in our treatment rooms.

Your New Year Beauty Refresh Starts Now

This isn't about perfection, it's about progress. Maybe you start by checking the ingredients in your next mascara purchase. Or perhaps you finally look up what's in that nail polish you've been using for years. Small, intentional steps add up to real change in how you care for yourself.

At Devereux Beauty, we're committed to using products that meet these standards because we believe you deserve to know exactly what's touching your skin, lashes, brows, and nails. As you navigate your own beauty journey this year, remember: knowledge is power, and you have every right to be curious, selective, and intentional about what you choose.

Here's to a year of smarter, more empowered beauty choices. 🖤
